Jorhat, August 18: Police have arrested two women and summoned another for questioning in connection with the mysterious death of 18-year-old Anwesha Saikia, a resident of Na-Pamua village under the Raraiyah police outpost in Jorhat district. An FIR naming two women and a man has been registered in the case.
According to police, Anwesha left her home on August 15 after receiving calls from one of the arrested women, identified as Monalisa, stating she was going to Jorhat town to buy clothes. Her family last spoke to her around 7:30 pm that evening, when she said she was on her way home. Approximately 1.5 hours later, the family received a call informing them that she was critically ill and had been taken to Jorhat Medical College and Hospital (JMCH). She was declared dead at the hospital.
Anwesha was found in a critical condition at an apartment in Gauri Enclave, Dahbara Chuk (B Block, B-2), before being shifted to JMCH. Police are examining the sequence of events in the hours preceding her hospitalisation, including reports that destinations were allegedly changed while she was being rushed for treatment. CCTV footage showing her being moved from the apartment and a video recorded by the auto-rickshaw driver who transported her are under review.
Jorhat Sadar police station officer Hrisikesh Hazarika confirmed that the two arrested women are allegedly involved in the incident. Monalisa was arrested at Barua Chariali after remaining absconding for three days. Jharna Goswami, mother of Ayan Goswami and associated with the Gauri Enclave apartment, has been summoned for questioning. Ayan Goswami, named in the FIR and accused by the family of involvement, remains absconding along with some associates. The case was initially registered at the Rowriah police outpost and later transferred to Jorhat Sadar police station.
The family has alleged that Anwesha was assaulted and killed. They claimed her clothes had been changed and that she had injuries, including scratches on her calf, back and face, blood around her eyes and the back of her head, and frothing from her mouth. Family members have also raised questions about possible drug involvement and a gathering at the apartment. Security personnel at the complex reportedly noted youths entering and leaving the premises late at night.
Police are investigating all angles, including the circumstances of her departure from home, the events at the apartment, the hospital journey, and the family’s allegations. Post-mortem examination and forensic analysis are expected to provide further clarity. The investigation is ongoing.
