Guwahati, August 18: The death toll from floods in Assam this year has climbed to 105 after one more person drowned in Sivasagar district, the Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA) said on Tuesday.
Of the 105 flood-related deaths recorded so far, 64 were male, 24 female and 17 children. Sivasagar accounts for the highest number of fatalities at 53, followed by Charaideo with 22, Jorhat with nine, Golaghat with eight, Karbi Anglong with four and Dhemaji with three.
According to the latest ASDMA bulletin, nearly 32,000 people remained affected across five districts. The overall flood situation has shown improvement compared to previous days, when a larger number of districts and people were impacted. However, 3,198.77 hectares of cropland continue to remain submerged, raising concerns over agricultural losses.
Relief and rehabilitation measures are continuing. Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma recently released ₹47.93 crore as interim assistance through Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT) to 31,951 families in Sivasagar, Charaideo, Jorhat and Golaghat districts. With this disbursement, the state has so far provided ₹146.26 crore to 96,842 flood-affected families. Damage assessment and verification are ongoing in the affected areas.
Authorities are operating relief camps and distribution centres where required, while monitoring water levels and weather conditions. The ASDMA has urged continuous vigilance as the monsoon season continues.
